Description
A creamy homemade onion dip made with slowly caramelized onions, cream cheese, sour cream, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and fresh chives.
Ingredients
- Yellow Onions
-
Yellow onions are my first choice because they have a balanced flavor and become beautifully sweet as they cook.
Sweet onions can also be used if you prefer a milder, sweeter result.
- Butter
-
Butter adds richness and helps the onions brown beautifully.
- Olive Oil
-
A little olive oil works with the butter and helps keep the butter from browning too quickly.
- Cream Cheese
-
Use softened full-fat cream cheese for the smoothest texture.
Let it sit at room temperature before mixing.
- Sour Cream
-
Sour cream adds tang and keeps the dip from tasting too heavy.
- Garlic
-
Fresh garlic adds another layer of savory flavor.
Add it near the end of the onion-cooking process so it doesn’t burn.
- Worcestershire Sauce
-
A small amount gives the dip a deeper savory note.
- Chives
-
Fresh chives add a mild onion flavor and a fresh finish.
- Salt and Black Pepper
-
Season gradually and taste before adding more.
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
- 2 tablespoons fresh chives, chopped
Instructions
- Thinly slice the onions.
- Melt butter and olive oil in a large skillet.
- Add onions and a pinch of salt.
- Cook over medium-low heat for 30–40 minutes until soft and deeply golden.
- Add garlic and cook for 30–60 seconds.
- Remove from heat and cool slightly.
- Mix cream cheese and sour cream until smooth.
- Add Worcestershire sauce and black pepper.
- Fold in caramelized onions and chives.
- Chill for at least 30 minutes before serving.
Notes
For the best flavor, don’t rush the onions. They should be soft and deeply golden rather than dark or burnt.
