  • Cuisine: American

Description

These spooky cheese fingers are an easy no-bake Halloween appetizer made with creamy cream cheese, Colby Jack cheese, fresh chives, and simple seasonings. Shaped like creepy fingers and finished with pretzel “fingernails” and a little ketchup or olive tapenade, they look impressive while taking only about 45–50 minutes to prepare. Perfect for Halloween parties, family gatherings, appetizer boards, and spooky snack tables.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 4 oz Colby Jack cheese, finely shredded or shaved
  • 2 tbsp sour cream
  • 1 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp smoked paprika
  • 3 tbsp fresh chives, finely chopped
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • About 18 pretzel sticks, for the fingernails
  • Grapes or cherry tomatoes, optional, for decoration
  • Ketchup, olive tapenade, salsa, or ranch, for dipping

Instructions

  • Let the cream cheese sit at room temperature for about 20–30 minutes to soften.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, sour cream, and mayonnaise. Mix until smooth and creamy.
  • Add the shredded Colby Jack cheese, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, smoked paprika, chopped chives, salt, and black pepper. Stir until everything is evenly combined.
  • Let the mixture rest for about 5 minutes so the seasonings can blend.
  • Transfer the cheese mixture onto parchment paper or plastic wrap. Shape it into a smooth oblong log approximately 9 inches long and 2 inches thick.
  • Wrap the log tightly and refrigerate for at least 25 minutes, or until firm enough to cut cleanly.
  • Remove the chilled cheese log and cut it into approximately 18 even pieces.
  • Shape each piece gently with your fingers to resemble a creepy finger. Use your thumb to create a slight indentation for the knuckle and fingertip.
  • Press one pretzel stick into the end of each cheese finger to create a spooky fingernail. For a bloodier Halloween effect, add a small amount of ketchup around the nail.
  • Arrange the spooky fingers on a dark serving platter. Add black olives, fresh herbs, grapes, or cherry tomatoes around the platter for decoration.
  • Serve with ketchup, olive tapenade, salsa, ranch, or your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Chill the cheese mixture before shaping and cutting for the best results.
  • If the mixture becomes too soft while shaping, return it to the refrigerator for 10–15 minutes.
  • For a stronger cheese flavor, substitute part of the Colby Jack with cheddar or Gouda.
  • For a gluten-free version, use certified gluten-free pretzels.
  • Keep dipping sauces separate until serving so the pretzels remain crisp.
  • The cheese log can be prepared up to 2 days ahead and kept refrigerated.
  • For a more dramatic Halloween presentation, use a black or dark slate platter with fresh herbs and black olives.
